Borussia Dortmund Confirm Signing of Emre Can From Juventus

Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Juventus’ Emre Can on loan, with the midfielder set to join on a permanent basis if certain parameters are met.

Former Liverpool star Can has struggled since leaving Anfield for Turin and was left out of the Serie A side’s Champions League squad by Maurizio Sarri earlier this season, the Germany international admitting back in September he was ‘shocked and angry’ over the omission.

He will get the chance to play in Europe’s elite club competition with Dortmund, with the Bundesliga outfit set to face Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16.

Dortmund have now confirmed the deal, revealing in a statement: “Borussia Dortmund has signed German international Emre Can from Italian champions Juventus Turin with immediate effect.

“The 26-year-old will be loaned until the end of the season. If agreed parameters are met, the loan is then transferred to a fixed transfer.”

Can added: “I think the team has great potential and can win something. I am convinced that I can help them and can’t wait to play in front of these fans for whom Borussia Dortmund is known all over the world for the first time.”

Can joined Juventus from Liverpool in 2018 and enjoyed a reasonably good first season with La Vecchia Signora, featuring in 37 games in all competitions, winning Serie A and the Supercoppa Italiana.

However, the massive competition for places under Sarri has seen Can’s game time decrease, with the likes of Miralem Pjanic, Blaise Matuidi, Rodrigo Bentancur, Adrien Rabiot and Sami Khedira all above him in the pecking order.

The 26-year-old was also said to be interesting Premier League sides Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal, while former club Bayern Munich were also linked before he sealed the move to Signal Iduna Park.

The deal will give Dortmund added depth in central midfield, with BVB having previously sold Julian Weigl to Portuguese side Benfica.
