Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has confirmed that Callum Hudson-Odoi and Antonio Rüdiger will both miss the Champions League clash with Valencia.
The Blues have been without Hudson-Odoi since their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace earlier this month, while centre-back Rüdiger has only made a handful of appearances with the Under-23s since he picked up a groin injury in September.
Lampard has hinted that both players could make their return in the Premier League against West Ham at the weekend, but Hudson-Odoi and Rüdiger will not be part of the Chelsea squad that walks out at the Mestalla on Wednesday.
“Hudson-Odoi not available, hopefully for the weekend,” Lampard said, quoted by football.london. “Rüdiger is now just match fitness, so more days than weeks.”
The Chelsea boss also reflected on the club’s first meeting with Valencia in the Champions League group stages earlier this season, insisting that their defeat at Stamford Bridge actually spurred them on to enjoy a fantastic run of form.
Former Bolton striker Rodrigo Moreno scored the only goal of the game on matchday one in Group H, but since then Albert Celades’ side have only picked up four points from a possible nine and currently sit in third place.
“I don’t think it was them being raw, we have quality in this competition. The major feeling after the first game was a the lesson that if you sleep for one moment you can lose.
“We have shown moments where we have gone to tough places. The rules remain the same. It is a fantastic stadium to play football, but a difficult one.
“I believe in the group and the ability. I believe there is more to come. The loss in the first game has got us into this position. We have brought that knockout football earlier in the competition.”
