Gasp: ‘Scudetto talk for Inter and Juve only’

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has claimed ‘only Juventus and Inter can speak about the Scudetto’ ahead of their big match against Lazio.

Both Atalanta and Lazio impressed in 2019-20, finishing third and fourth respectively, but the latter seemed like Juventus’ closest rivals for the Scudetto until March.

Gasperini, who helped Atalanta reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League last term, said the Orobici ‘will do our best’ to keep up with the Serie A giants.

“I don’t discuss what others think, the important thing is that my concepts haven’t changed,” Gasperini said at a press conference.

“Today, only Juventus and Inter can speak about the Scudetto, maybe Napoli. We will try to do our best, but the important thing is that the concepts are clear.”

Simone Inzaghi’s men suffered after the resumption in June and eventually ended up at fourth in Serie A, but Gasperini expects a tough challenge at the Olimpico tomorrow.

“It’s an exciting match because of what has been done in recent years,” he said. “It’s worth as much as a match at the end of the season.

“Both teams will do their best to win. Each match is different, what won’t change is the team spirit.”

The Atalanta coach is wary of Lazio’s strengths going forward and hope to keep them at bay.

“It’s a balances team in all departments and the added value is given by the forwards like [Ciro] Immobile and [Joaquin] Correa, but also [Sergej] Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto.

“As we have seen in previous games, there have been many goals. We must do better to limit their efficiency in attack.”

Lazio host Atalanta at 19.45 UK time tomorrow.
