The OL coach says the out-of-form player has to work to get back to his best after being plagued by injuries, while offering support to under-fire France striker Karim Benzema
Olympique Lyonnais head coach Remi Garde says Yoann Gourcuff needs to do try harder to recapture his form after numerous injury setbacks.
Since moving to Stade de Gerland in the summer of 2010 for a fee of €22 million, the France international’s appearances have been limited by a series of problems.
Now back in contention for a place in the first team after yet another injury, Gourcuff’s coach is beginning to apply the pressure.
“Gourcuff is a player who needs to show more, who needs to give his club more,” Garde told France Football.
“I hope this will happen fairly quickly. He was injured fairly recently and this hampered his game.”
The former Bordeaux man has made only 11 appearances so far this season but Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has belief in the marquee signing.
“I believe in the Yoann that came to Lyon three years ago. And I don’t think a player can lose his talent,” the club chief told RMC Sport.
“There may have been some difficulties, such as injuries and psychological issues, but we’re trying to create a supportive environment around Yoann that will help him to become the player he was before.”
Lyon boss Garde also offered his support to France striker Karim Benzema, who has struggled to score goals for the national side lately.
“I see a player who suffers like all goalscorers who do not convert their opportunities,” he told le10sport.com. “It feels like someone beginning to try to rush things and force his destiny.
“The highest level does not return overnight. With the support of all his team-mates and coaches, in addition to his talent, I think [his form] will return.”
