Ligue 1 club Bordeaux are keen on signing Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud in the upcoming January transfer window, although they face competition from Serie A giants Inter.
The 33-year-old France international has struggled to feature for Frank Lampard this season, only managing 191 minutes of Premier League action behind Michy Batshuayi and Tammy Abraham on the depth chart and prompting the possibility of a move elsewhere.
It is believed that Giroud is carefully considering his options as he prepares to battle it out to feature in Didier Deschamps’ Euro 2020 squad.
According to Goal, les Girondins are keen to bring Giroud to the Matmut Atlantique in January, although his £110,000 per week salary may prove to be a stumbling block for the six-time Ligue 1 winners.
Bordeaux, however, face competition from Antonio Conte’s Inter, with the former Chelsea striker eager to link up with his old boss. Conte sees Giroud as an alternative to Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez which may raise concerns for the Frenchman, who is already facing similar problems at Chelsea with Abraham and Batshuayi the preferred choices of Lampard.
With Giroud anxious to retain his place in Deschamps’ Euro 2020 squad, the France manager has urged the former Arsenal striker to push for a move in search of more regular first team football. Giroud has started only a single Premier League game since August, that coming in the 1-0 defeat at the hands of West Ham back in November when Abraham was out injured.
Giroud joins a host of Chelsea stars who are set for January departures, with the likes of Macros Alonso also attracting interest from Inter – who would in turn need to find new clubs for full-backs Cristiano Biraghi or Kwadwo Asamoah in order to bring Alonso to the Allianz Stadium.
Meanwhile Pedro, who has just six months left on his Chelsea contract, has been the subject of interest from a number of MLS clubs. Emerson Palmieri has also been scouted by a number of Serie A clubs, namely Juventus, although that deal is unlikely to happen in the upcoming window.
