Gonzalo Higuain to Return to Italy for Juventus Training as Serie A Nears Return

Gonzalo Higuain is set to return to Italy today to resume training with Juventus as the defending Serie A champions prepare for the impending return of Serie A.

Higuain confirmed that he was granted permission to return to his home country of Argentina in March amid the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, after he revealed that his mother had been unwell.

But with Serie A expected to be given the green light to resume imminently, clubs are preparing for a return to action by recalling players and resuming activities once more.

The Argentine forward has spent almost two months in Argentina, but he is expected to return to Turin today as the last player to report back for Juventus, according to Goal.

Higuain will be required to serve two weeks of mandatory isolation upon returning to Italy, before being allowed to return to first-team training alongside his teammates.

With Serie A targeting a return on 13 June, Juve players have already began individual training sessions to get back up to speed and ready to resume playing, despite the pandemic still affecting countries worldwide.

Before his mother’s health condition was revealed, it was speculated that Higuain had defied orders to return to his homeland. He has continually been linked with a move away from I Bianconeri after struggling to nail down a starting spot under Maurizio Sarri this season.

Now 32, Higuain has started just 16 Serie A games under Sarri this season, managing five goals and four assists in the league, casting doubt over his future with the Old Lady.

However, with the Bundesliga set to resume on 16 May, the German league has set the pace for football to resume in Europe. It is believed that Serie A’s return date will be decided when the Italian scientific committees review the football federation’s current protocol.
